OTTAWA - The University of Ottawa says it wants to set itself up as a beacon for other Canadian institutions who are dealing with the issue of sexual violence, in the wake of its own scandal around members of the mens hockey team. The university released a task force report Thursday on respect and equality on its campus, along with a series of 11 recommendations that it has committed to fulfilling. Two former students were recently charged by Thunder Bay police in connection with an alleged assault that occurred during a hockey team trip nearly a year ago.President Allan Rock hinted at the recent high-profile harassment and assault allegations levelled at individuals at Dalhousie University, the CBC and on Parliament Hill. This past year alone weve seen the issue arise on a number of campuses in Canada and the United States, as well as in some of our venerable national institutions, Rock told reporters. As for the University of Ottawa, our focus of course must be right here in our own university community. And by doing all we can on our own campus, to make the environment safe, respectful and free of sexual violence, we can become a beacon. We can create an example for others to follow. The university report included an on-line survey of 1,088 students, more than two-thirds of whom were women. Sixteen per cent of the women and eight per cent of the men said they had experienced at least one incident of sexual violence.Forty-four per cent of the female respondents said they had been touched, hugged or kissed against their will, with another 32 per cent saying they had been asked on a date or a sexual encounter by someone who wouldnt take no for an answer. The task force was particularly concerned with harmful beliefs that surfaced in the survey results. For example, 38 per cent of men surveyed agreed or felt neutral about a statement that women who wore low-cut tops or short skirts were sending mixed messages. The report recommends the university adopt a statement of values on respect and equality, to be promoted by different bodies on campus. Its also urging the school to institute mandatory training on sexual violence to all senior administrators, beginning in September. The task force also recommended a new sexual violence policy and protocol that would apply to everyone on campus — not just students. Some who participated in the report complained that not enough was being done about professors who harass support staff and students. Were not the only ones who have issues of sexualized violence, were not the only campus, were not the only institution. Look around us, Rock said. The question is, what do you do about it? Were doing something about it, something meaningful. Im happy to have our reputation determined from that perspective. The universitys approach to the reputations of the members of the mens hockey team, meanwhile, is the subject of litigation. Twenty-two former players are represented by a class-action lawsuit, which argues the school has done nothing to clear the names of those who had no involvement in the alleged assault. The issue of fairness for the accused has also been a major aspect of the debate around the harassment allegations on Parliament Hill and at Dalhousie University. The Canadian Press reported last week that the University of Ottawas internal investigation of the allegations was actually part of a legal strategy designed to protect it against future lawsuits.Rock told reporters he didnt know whether the hockey players interviewed by investigator Steven Gaon were told that he was working for the law firm hired to represent the universitys interests.Gaons ensuing reports were later used as the basis for the firing of coach Real Paiement, and the suspension of the hockey program the 2015-16 season.I can tell you that the players were told the interviews were voluntary, and that was the basis on which they were conducted, said Rock.We did engage a law firm early on, we wanted to know our legal obligations and the report was undertaken because we wanted to know the facts before we took any action. The task forces survey of 1,088 students was conducted after offering an initial random sample of 5,000 the chance of winning three prizes of a $500 tuition break. The polling industrys professional body says online surveys cannot be assigned a margin of error as they are not a random sample and dont necessarily represent the whole population. Nuno, acquired in the deal that sent Brandon McCarthy to the New York Yankees, gave up three hits, struck out a career-high seven and walked one in seven innings.BARCELONA, Spain -- Lionel Messi set another scoring record by netting a hat trick to pace Barcelonas 7-0 rout of Osasuna in the Spanish league on Sunday, ensuring the defending champions stayed in striking distance of leader Real Madrid before their critical "clasico" match next week. The three goals bring Messis career tally for Barcelona to 371 in all games -- including friendlies -- breaking the club record of 369 held by Paulino Alcantara since 1927. The 26-year-old Messi was already the clubs all-time leading scorer in official games. Messi assured Barcelonas fans they will enjoy his goals for years to come, saying "as long as people want me, I will stay here. My intention is to retire wearing the Barcelona shirt." The Argentina forward netted from close range to open the scoring at Camp Nou in the 18th minute. Alexis Sanchez made it 2-0 four minutes later before Andres Iniesta scored just his second goal of the season in the 34th. Messi struck twice more in the second half, either side of Cristian Tellos goal, to give him a team-leading 18 league goals this campaign, before he set up Pedro Rodriguez. It was Messis 20th career hat trick for Barcelona, to go with four four-goal games and one five-goal outing. Barcelona remained in third place, four points behind Madrid, ahead of their meeting in the Spanish capital next Sunday. Barcelonas big win, which matched its scoreline over Levante to start the season, came one week after it slumped to a 1-0 loss at Valladolid, which cast doubts on the teams ability to stay in the race for the league title with Madrid and second-place Atletico Madrid. But its victory midweek over Manchester City in the Champions League and this dominant performance appear to have restored its credit as a contender before Gerard Martinos team faces Madrid in a game that may go a long way to deciding the title. "We hope we can play a great game," Messi said about the upcoming clash at the Santiago Bernabeu. "We know it will be difficult, but we will do all we can to fight for the league title until the very end.dddddddddddd We received a lot of criticism after the Valladolid match. We knew we didnt play well and this (win) boosts our confidence." Also, striker Imanol Agirretxes second-half header gave Real Sociedad a 1-0 win at home over Valencia, provisionally lifting the Basque side into fifth place. Villarreal can move back ahead of Sociedad on Monday when it hosts fourth-place Athletic Bilbao. Kevin Gameiro scored a double as Sevilla eased to a 4-1 win over Valladolid at home. Ivan Rakitic and Diogo Rosario also scored for Sevilla before Javi Guerra got Valladolids consolation goal. Real Betis drew 0-0 at Elche as it remained stuck at the bottom of the standings and winless in all 14 away games this season. Osasunas away woes continued as it again proved to be far from the side that has taken points from Barcelona, Madrid and Atletico this season in Pamplona. The visitors started as the more aggressive side, but Messi quickly ended thoughts of an upset when he glanced in Alexis low cross from a tight angle. Messis goal ignited Barcelonas attack, which put on an overwhelming passing display to secure the three points before halftime. Left back Jordi Alba worked a one-two combination with Iniesta before picking Alexis out arriving to the penalty spot where the Chile forward netted his 17th league goal of the season. It was then Iniestas turn to take a rare goal with a stinging left-footed strike from outside the area that flew past goalkeeper Andres Fernandez before landing in the far corner of the net. Barcelona kept pouring it on. Dani Alves, Xavi Hernandez and Iniesta all drew saves from Fernandez on both sides of halftime, while Pedro went close twice. Messi hit again in the 63rd after he and Iniesta broke down Osasunas left flank with a series of exchanges before firing home. Tello went on in the 76th and two minutes later he lashed in a long-range shot for Barcelonas fifth to completely demoralize Osasuna before Messi scored from a pass by Dani Alves in the 88th and laid off for Pedro to round out the demolition in injury time.
